Decluttering Your Home. 10 Surprising Reasons Why You Really Should

decluttering-your-home-10-surprising-reasons-why-you-really-should

The idea of tidying up my home properly was initially just a practical benefit for me. I loved the thought of opening any cupboard or any drawer in my home and everything looks tidy and organised!

When I discovered Marie Kondo’s method I said ‘Let’s do this!’ as I was very motivated to learn how to declutter in order to have a tidy and well organised home. Once my project progressed I was surprised and amazed by the positive outcome and here is what I discovered.

DECLUTTERING CREATES MORE SPACE

It is so nice to get rid of your clutter, do you really need the things you’ve kept for ages? It’s time to let them go. Once this is done you will notice that you have created more room for organising yourself.  Your home will look more spacious and you finally have an overview of what’s inside your cupboards and drawers. Isn’t that great?!

2. DECLUTTERING GIVES YOU FREEDOM AND REDUCES STRESS

OMG! All tidy, imagine that?! No more stress trying to find your keys, your birth certificate, that contract you suddenly need to have a look at. You will know where they are because everything is organised now. The thought which followed you for years that you have to start clearing out your things will leave you for good. Clear space will clear your mind too and give you a sense of freedom most of us are lacking.

3. DECLUTTERING MAKES CLEANING EASIER AND SAVES YOU TIME

Believe it or not even after you declutter, it will be very easy to keep your home tidy. You will start putting things back where they belong to, as all is organised in a logical systematic way and has its own place – this will prevent building up the clutter again. When you tidy up weekly there won’t be much to do, just a bit of cleaning to make all look fresh. That will make your everyday life so much easier and will save you so much time as you can skip the usual long tidy up scenarios before you start cleaning your place. Amazing!

4. DECLUTTERING MEANS MORE TIME FOR YOU

When you don’t have to spend hours on tidying up, you will have more time for yourself. I am saying TIME JUST FOR YOU which you can spend having a relaxing bath, doing facials, reading inspiring books, spending time with your family, friends or maybe learning something new – starting a new hobby perhaps?

5. DECLUTTERING SAVES YOU MONEY

When I started decluttering using Mari’s Kondo method I had to put all my clothes together. Suddenly I had a massive pile of clothes in front of me, which for the first time made me realize that actually I have too much stuff! At the same time it was strange as normally when looking in my wardrobe or my chest of drawers I felt that I didn’t have enough to wear and I needed more! Looking at this pile of clothes I came to a conclusion I have more than enough plus I spent quite a lot of money on things I’ve barely worn. This shifted my consuming mentality in two seconds and already over the last two months I manage to save about 30% of my salary. 🙂

6. DECLUTTERING GIVES YOU FEELING OF SATISFACTION AND GRATEFULNESS

Decluttering makes you feel that you have a well balanced home. Therefore you will start to appreciate what you have and feel grateful for it. I did and still do!

7. DECLUTTERING TEACHES YOU TO MAKE DESICIONS

Going through my stuff I had to decide what to keep and what to discard. I must admit it was quite hard at the beginning, as I wanted to keep everything. At this point I had to start making decisions as I didn’t want to end up keeping stuff I no longer needed. Deciding about every item was a great exercise in making up your mind on the spot especially for an indecisive person like me.

8. DECLUTTERING WILL HELP TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFESTYLE AND START TO TAKE ACTION IN LIFE

I visualised my ideal home and the life I wanted to lead before I started clearing out. Therefore I wanted things to be nice to make them fit in to my new lifestyle. Visualising made it very easy for me to decide what to keep. I kept the best stuff. When I was left with only nice clothes and beautiful items I felt it raised my lifestyle immediately.

Decluttering is a great foundation to start upgrading your lifestyle. Don’t wait for a better salary, more fulfilling job or more time to do that. Start NOW. Decluttering will help you to begin to take action in your life and the rest will follow. This is what I did.

Don’t postpone clearing out and organising your current home. Don’t say ‘one day’ as this doesn’t exist on the weekly calendar. TAKE ACTION!

9. DECLUTTERING MAKES YOU LIVE IN THE PRESENT AND CONNECT WITH YOUR ENVIROMENT

Once organised, you start to enjoy your home environment more than ever before. That certainly shifted my focus on living in the present.

10. DECLUTTERING BRINGS POSITIVITY AND HAPPINESS

By keeping the best stuff, things which you love, will definitely boost your level of happiness! You can finally see a beautiful home. It makes you appreciate your environment more especially after creating it yourself. It’s no longer a house or a flat, it is a real home, YOUR HOME!

Final Words

As you’ve chosen to keep things that spark joy and you’ve made some strong decisions you can transfer these skills into other areas of your life.  Recognizing what sparks joy’ is the same as recognizing what makes you happy. DECLUTTER NEGATIVITY.  It could be anything whether it is a favourite old pullover or a job you don’t like. Don’t be afraid to make changes as that can only lead to a better life! In my case it was my job I decided to leave and I did – the best decision I ever made after a few years of procrastination!

Today tidying up has become a ritual I enjoy and not just an annoying task I used to avoid. Overall decluttering was a powerful exercise, the first step towards designing a better lifestyle. What a great experience! I wish I learnt about it a long time ago. Now I realise that LESS IS MORE!
